A Live Life Call to Action Campaign

Major Skateboard Event July 9th, 2011 – DENVER Colorado!!!
The ONE Gathering – Skate For Life competition will take place in JULY 9th 2011 at the Downtown Denver Skatepark. The skatepark is located on 20th Street and I-25 near the South Platte River – a historical gathering place for the Apache, Arapaho, Lakota, Cheyenne, Comanche, Kiowa, Navajo, Pawnee, Pueblo, Shoshone, Ute and many other Indigenous cultures to this area. The ONE Gathering will prove to be another huge success with proceeds this year benefiting the Wounded Knee 4-Directions Skatepark/Art Studio to be built on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation (a project of Stronghold Society, a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) non-profit organization).

Last year’s ONE Gathering gained full support from the City of Denver. The event attracted about 5,000 attendees, 100+ skate competitors, 30 vendors, and over 60 awesome volunteers.

Major supporters included FritoLay/Gatorade/Pepsico, VANS Off The Wall, Wahoo’s Fish Tacos, Denver American Indian Commission, Denver Indian Health and Family Services, Tocabe’s Native American Eatery, G&B Solutions, A-sa-ma-di, Atomic Air, Elevated Color, RMICC, Nakota Designs and many, many others.

The stage rocked all day with music from NDAAZ, Jamie Laurie of the Flobots, Gabriel YAIVA, The Beer Boyz (aka nonBeerBoyz for the cause), Trickshot, Racecar Spelled Backwards, Skyline Surrender, etc! The South Dakota GEARUP Program brought over 200 Native youth and the State of Wyoming brought hundreds of youth to attend as well.

NOW we are planning for our next ONE Gathering in Denver, CO in July 9th, 2011, and gaining some serious support from all these people and MORE… and we thank you for your continued support of our outreach efforts. We will once again unite our communities, our youth, major companies, non-profits, vendors, musicians, skate clubs and skate shops, etc.

Stronghold Society’s “Skateboarding Saves Lives” is a Live Life Call To Action to support and encourage Native American youth to find hope and ambition to live a healthy life in mind, body and spirit. Our overall goal for the ONE Gathering – Skate For Life is to promote inclusiveness and a positive impact on youth of all races. By incorporating artistic achievement, social change, innovation, education, and healthy way of life outlooks, it will ensure a higher quality of life for all our youth.

You thrive, I thrive, WE THRIVE… as it should be. The Stronghold Society nonprofit dedicated to instilling hope and supporting youth movements through Live Life Call To Action Campaigns.

Quiksilver Waterman Collection presents the 6th Hawaiian Islands Vintage Surf Auction

Fifty years worth of connections and an unbridled passion for all things surf have made Randy Rarick’s Hawaiian Islands Vintage Surf Auction an international success story. The auction returns this year with just four months to hammer time: July 22 & 23, at the Blaisdell Center.

What began 10 years ago, running every other year, has become the most highly anticipated auction in the surfing world. The first five auctions saw more than $2.6million worth of privately owned pieces go under the hammer and Rarick is quietly confident that the 6th will be his best yet.

“This auction attracts a serious gathering of international surf collectors who know their stuff and share my deep passion for surfing history and the unique items this auction offers,” said Rarick. “I travel the world on a mission to discover quality, historic pieces and to ultimately make the connection between seller and buyer. It’s a win-win all around.”

Over the years the auction has included everything from the personal surfboards, surfwear and trophies of famous surfers, to original artwork, magazines, posters, decals and other artifacts of the surfing culture.

This year, 65 percent of the pieces offered will be antique surfboards from the turn of the century through to the mid-1980s. To legitimately be ‘vintage’, an item must be at least 25 years old. The next requirement is a good story and recorded history to go with it. And it doesn’t stop there; Rarick’s credo is that every board on offer is “good enough to hang or take out and ride”.

“My ultimate warehouse find came just in time for this year’s auction,” said Rarick. “From the Santa Paula, California airport hanger of movie actor Steve McQueen. It’s a pristine 1963 ‘speed’ board shaped by Pat Curren that was in the hanger alongside McQueen’s motorcycles, race cars and movie props. Talk about going back in time!”

Maloof Skateboarding Unveils Course Design for World Championships

Maloof Money Cup South Africa Skate Park to be Built Next to Famous Kimberley Diamond Mine,Will be New Destination for Skateboarders Around the World

(Irvine, CA – April 1, 2011)—Maloof Skateboarding today unveiled the course design for the brand new skate park that will be built in Kimberley, South Africa, for the upcoming Maloof Money Cup South Africa skateboarding world championships, Sept 30 – Oct 2. The concrete skate park design was inspired by the famous Kimberley diamond mine. Now a popular tourist attraction, the former mine was the world’s largest and was considered the largest hand-dug excavation on earth when it was finally closed in 1914.

“This incredible course that the Maloofs are building for us will be the crown jewel for all the world to see,” said John Block, member of the executive council for the Northern Cape. “The Northern Cape province is proud to be hosting a world class event. Not only will the Maloof Money Cup South Africa be invaluable in terms of directing global media attention to our province and its unique attractions, but it will also deliver a significant economic impact on the province and its communities.”

The street course, designed by Joe Ciaglia of California Skateparks and Pro Skater and Vans Team Rider Geoff Rowley, pays tribute to Kimberley’s heritage, incorporating the famous Kimberley diamond into the course design. The features for the course will be based on skate spots from around the world. In addition, the event will also feature a vert contest incorporating a Mini Mega ramp with a vert ramp that will remain permanent for the community. Construction on the skate park begins in July and will be completed in September.

“Skateboarding is the fastest growing sport in the world and the demand for skateparks is enormous. We are proud to bring Maloof Money Cup to countries that can benefit from the positive impact skateboarding can have in their communities,” said Joe Maloof, founder of Maloof Money Cup and owner of the NBA’s Sacramento Kings and the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas.

First Stop on the 2011 Big Wave World Tour Kicks Off with a $20,000 Prize Purse

PUNTA DE LOBOS, Pichilemu, Chile (April 13, 2011) – The Quiksilver Ceremonial Punta De Lobos Big Wave Invitational will commence this Spring with the world’s top big wave riders competing for a $20,000 prize purse during a contest window spanning April 1- May 31, 2011.  The first stop on the 2011 Big Wave World Tour, the Quiksilver Ceremonial is one of Chile’s most anticipated big wave events, with this year’s swell expected to reach gigantic conditions with a potential for 30 ft. waves and perfect tubes behind Punta de Lobos’ famous “morros.”

“This being the third year of the Ceremonial as part of the Big Wave World Tour, expectations for some special waves are high on everyone’s list,” said Gary Linden, Big Wave World Tour Director and Contest Director. “We have all seen the potential, and with the early season swell patterns so strong, it is now just waiting for the elements to align.”

The 2011 Quiksilver Ceremonial participants include: Jamie Sterling, Kohl Christensen, Anthony Taschnick, Carlos Burle, Marcos Monteiro, Peter Mel, Chris Bertish, Cristian Merello, Greg Long, Gabriel Villarán, Mark Healey, Kealii Mamala, Jaimie Mitchell, Danilo Couto, Sebastian De Romana, Rusty Long, Grant Twiggy Baker, Ramón Navarro, Diego Medina, Fernando Zegers, Reinaldo Ibarra, Matías López and León Vicuna. Past winners of the event include Christian Merello (2010) and Grant “Twiggy” Baker (2009).

“I feel that this year’s event will be blessed with amazing waves, since we’ve already had four amazing south swells hit Pichilemu with perfect conditions and waves of 15 feet plus,” said Ramón Navarro, professional big wave rider and Punta de Lobos local. “These swells have groomed the sand on the point earlier than normal, so as it continues to settle, we’ll have perfect conditions. The waiting period has just begun, and we’re already seeing really strong weather activity around New Zealand – without high pressure systems to block it, – which I love because it means it will be BIG in Chile.”

The 2011 Quiksilver Ceremonial Punta de Lobos will be webcast live and hosted by Chad Wells & Strider Wasilewski at www.quiksilver-ceremonial.cl. Competition updates and information will be posted at www.quiksilver.com, facebook and twitter.

The 2011 Quiksilver Ceremonial Punta de Lobos would like to thank the sponsors who made this event possible, including Sony Ericsson, Suzuki, Corona, and Carozzi.
