Opening August 27, 2010

Welcome to the North Shore of Oahu – the 7 Mile Miracle – surfing’s Xanadu.  A freak of nature that is long considered the ultimate test for surfers.

It’s the Triple Crown – the final 3 contests of the year – held in the cyclone of the North Shore between Halloween and Christmas Eve.

The Triple Crown is a catalyst for a big wave soap opera that unfolds around, beside and away from the actual contests.

Fifty-five days of low comedy, high drama and nonstop jaw dropping action with the biggest waves, while the best surfers young and old, men and women, take the challenge on this beautiful, compelling earthly and human landscape.  The North Shore’s population triples and locals are joined by heroes, posers, legends, leeches, fans, fanatics, dreamers, saints and sinners looking for money, fame, redemption, love, lust, inspiration, parties, respect and surf.

400 will arrive to confront their fears of whether or not they should have come: 50 will nearly drown, boards will be broken, stitches given, a few dreams fulfilled, a few nightmares visited, legends bestowed and revoked.

55 days for paradise found.  Or paradise lost.  This is the crossroads.  For some, nothing will ever be the same.

Director Dana Brown previously explored the world of surfing in the critically acclaimed Step into Liquid and collaborations with his father, Bruce Brown, including Endless Summer II, Endless Summer Revisited and On any Given Sunday Revisited.  On Highwater, the family tradition continues, as Dana collaborates with his son, Wes.

OPEN CALL TO YOU, TO PARTICIPATE IN NEXT EXHIBITION AT TAM – The Rise Of RAD

One of the highlights of today’s skate phenomenon, that has encouraged ‘rad culture’ to thrive, is its practice of visual documentation. Be it amateur or professional photography, we see pictures of skaters striking a mid-air pose amid some of the most urban of landscapes or even in their own backyards. Skaters follow their urge to redefine the space around them – whether down a stair’s handrail, trickling off a sidewalk, or weaving through a mass of people.

With the endless number of places around your neighborhood, cities, or even beyond, the Torrance Art Museum invites you to enter a photo of yourself in these spaces. Your entries will be part of TAM’s upcoming exhibition The Rise of Rad: The Influence of Skate Culture on Contemporary Art which is scheduled to open on Saturday July 24, 2010, 6-9pm. These photos, which will be excitingly included in the exhibition itself, shall illustrate the body in relationship to movement, space and architecture (whatever that may mean to you). We want to visually see how you or your peers “disrupt” or “alter” the space around you and of course we do not limit participation to skaters.

We ask that you mail or deliver a 5 x 7 inch photograph (or smaller) to TAM at 3320 Civic Center Dr. Torrance, CA 90503 care of me (Gretchen Reyes) or fax it to us at 310 781 7106. Emailed submissions will not be accepted. Though these entries will be included in the exhibition, owners or subjects of these photos will not be listed individually. Also, please keep in mind that we maintain the right to refuse acceptance of any image that may not complement the project. TAM would appreciate as many images as possible before the exhibition’s opening on July 24th, however, photos received after that date will be continually posted up in the museum throughout the duration of the exhibition until one week before the end of the show on September 4th. NO SUBMISSIONS WILL BE RETURNED, so do not send us any pictures you want to keep.

Spread the word to your friends!

If you have any questions contact Gretchen Reyes at (310) 618-3842 or email tamintern@torranceca.gov.

Come and check out a preview for The Rise of Rad exhibition at our website http://www.torranceartmuseum.com/.

Laird Hamilton, one of surfing’s legendary wave riders, recently spoke out on the turmoil in the Gulf Coast;  touching on the heart wrenching effects the oil spills have had on the wildlife and people inhabiting the area.  Using the National Resources Defense Council (NRDC) as his medium to present his and his wife  opinion, Laird released a video statement detailing the risks of off-shore drilling for oil and the costs of neglecting the health of our oceans.  Surfers around the world have spoken out about this tragedy and it’s long term effects.  Watch the full video and see for yourself.  A hardcore personality like Laird never lies.  If you haven’t already read it, get to know Laird a little more as he’s interviewed by Jeff Ho in Issue 57. – JESS BRAAM

Welcome to the interesting, inspiring, and just damn awesome world of Jim Houser, avid skate fan and contemporary art genius.  Scrolling through his works online doesn’t seem to do it justice especially considering he composes an original score for the majority of this live installations.  If you’re in the LA area show some love and check out his show at Subliminal Projects.  Should be a fun night of good company.  DON’T MISS IT.

THE DAILY JUICE: JUNE 29, 2010

Bang! A whole wheel is darting along the center divider of the 5 North just outside Bakersfield sending everything in its path up in flames. The vehicle I am riding in is pulling to the shoulder of the highway, which can only mean two things… That is our wheel and this is going to be one hell of a trip.

The plan was to head up to beautiful San Francisco, for what was supposed to be a routine business trip/awesome weekend spent attending the Thread apparel show and the first ever Cannabis Cup and the Epic Daze concert sponsored by High Times magazine & BC Northern Lights.  This trip however, was anything but routine. After our little 3 hour set back of losing our wheel and catching the highway on fire we proceeded to head to San Francisco. Twelve hours from the time we left Los Angeles we arrived at our hotel, by now the mix up with the rooms had little impact on the group. We just wanted to get to sleep and start our first day in San Francisco.

“Oh Shit!” I remember hearing Rosie say as I snaped to attention from a hazy sleep. She had overslept and needed to call the front desk to work out the situation with our rooms. After a cup or two of complimentary crap roast coffee, I felt alive enough to grab my skateboard and meet up with my friend to skate Potrero and make my rounds through the local skate shops.  While skating at Potrero I met a few characters that were also in town for the same events (surprise surprise). Graham was a stencil artist and was going to be live painting one of the BC Northern Lights boxes during the Epic Daze show. We skated through the day cracking jokes and exchanging contacts. I started heading back to the room stopping along the way to grab the bare necessity, a burrito from Taqueria Can Cun, so pumped! I got back to the room finished my burrito and hopped in the shower, now it was time to get some rest for the Thread show and the concert.

Bing! Just like clockwork my circadian rhythm strikes again to pull me from a much needed sleep at 6:15 am. “Now what the hell do I do?” I asked myself. “I don’t have to be awake for another 2 hours at least!” As in all of our minds who are pure skateboarders my immediate thought was “Go Skate” and I did. Stepping out into the city that morning was a change to say the least. I’d been spoiled by the warm Southern California rays and was now facing classic San Francisco frigid wind and fog. The silver lining was I had the park all to myself, every line mine for the taking, mine for making and mine for slamming. After I decided I had taken enough abuse for the day, I met up with the Nature’s Mistake and Railcar crew for the Thread show. Nature’s Mistake and Railcar had it right with live screen printing, live sewing, and live painting. The show was great, there were so many brands that made it out and the day was set off by the fashion show held in the middle of the exhibition center. Once my portion of the painting was finished I made my rounds and said my goodbyes. I was off to Epic Daze!

Things were looking positive for the evening, the skate from Thread was only about a mile to where Epic Daze was being held, which was ironically located only a block from where I previously lived in SF 5 years ago. The venue was tucked in off 6th street just below Market in the Soma district. From the very instant I arrived I was treated with the most friendly attitude, my contacts and the BC Northern Lights crew made sure I had everything I needed, including extra VIP and backstage passes. While navigating the labyrinth of rooms and hallways backstage I tried to imagine what the night might be like; I had no clue what I was in for. As the doors opened a steady flow of people was quickly filling up the Mezzanine, I made my way down stairs and out back to find my new friend Graham starting his painting on the BCNL box, and live glass blowing from Good Stash! The line up for the bands to play the event was great, Eagles of Death Metal, Lyrics Born, Dj Ras MG (of Sublime), Johnny Kaplin and the Lazy Stars, Ila Mawana, and Stand Down.  With every set that passed the energy in the Mezzanine grew to new heights until there wasn’t enough room to hold it in any longer. There wasn’t a bad vibe for miles, for a short time there it really seemed like the Summer of Love was back, and for those that attended Epic Daze it was back. Somehow the spirit of San Francisco combined with the mood of the concert resurrected the sights, sounds and even the scents that were 1969. Writing this I found myself day dreaming I was back among the good tunes, good people, and good times that is Epic Daze.

Many thanks to Tarren Wolfe, owner of BC Northern Lights, for presenting a fun filled event that was enjoyed by so many.  We look forward to seeing what you have in store for the future! For more photos from Epic Daze visit here.  More to be posted soon. – CARSON “GNARSON” CORNETT

TONY HAWK FOUNDATION NEWS - In a survey of law-enforcement officials from across the U.S., officers report that public skateparks have had a positive impact on youth in their communities, contributed to a reduction in skate-related trespassing, and facilitated more positive interaction between cops and kids. Conducted by the Tony Hawk Foundation in 2009, over 100 officers were interviewed from communities where the Foundation has contributed to establishing a free, public skatepark. Ninety percent responded favorably when asked if they considered their skatepark an important community asset. Most also reported that they’ve had no major incidents at their skateparks, and almost half credit the skatepark for reducing incidents of youth crime in their communities. Federally registered nonprofit organizations, municipalities, or public agencies may apply for grants from the Tony Hawk Foundation. The deadline to complete applications is March 1, 2010. http://tonyhawkfoundation.org

STREET LEAGUE SKATEBOARDING – Street League Skateboarding announced today that for the first time in history, street skateboarding competition has been organized into its very own professional league, with the best skateboarders in the world competing head-to-head in a series of individual tour stops in the summer of 2010. Founded by twenty-year professional skateboarder and entrepreneur, Rob Dyrdek, Street League is truly the future of competitive street skateboarding. Signed to multi-year contracts, a total of twenty-four of the worlds biggest skateboarding stars will compete in Street League exclusively. The first pros that have signed are arguably the top skateboarders in the world and include Chris Cole, Ryan Sheckler, Greg Lutzka, Torey Pudwill, PJ Ladd, Sean Malto, Mike Mo Capaldi, Mikey Taylor, Billy Marks, Tommy Sandoval, and Paul Rodriguez. Dyrdek, in discussing the origins of the league says, “It has been a dream of mine to create a professional tour that bridges the gap between true street skateboarding and contest skating, which to date has been fragmented and misguided. Street League is more than just a new contest series; it will redefine the way skateboarding competitions are done.” To maximize the talents of these street skateboarding stars, Street League has designed authentic concrete skate plazas to be built on the floors of world-class sports arenas. In addition, Street League brings with it the exclusive use of the instant scoring technology, ISX (Instant Scoring Experience), to the world of skateboarding. The inaugural year of Street League features a 3-stop arena tour beginning at Jobing.com Arena in Glendale, Arizona on August 28th, Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, California on September 11th, and the final stop in Las Vegas at the Thomas Mack Center on September 25th. SKATEBOARD: EVOLUTION OF A CALIFORNIA CULTURE – Exhibit runs through May 30, 2010. Curated by museum staff curator Michael Trotter and a committee including skateboard historian Dale Smith, 1960s world champion Cris Dawson, Zephyr founders Skip Engblom and Jeff Ho as well as legendary Z-Boys Tony Alva, Stacy Peralta and Nathan Pratt, the exhibition traces the evolution of boards from pre-1950 to the present, showcasing the riders, designers, artists, and manufacturers that created the California phenomenon known as the skateboard. From the first planks of wood with metal roller skate wheels nailed to the bottom, through the era of clay to modern polyurethane and kicktails, the boards and riders scaled greater heights of daring and style and took sidewalk surfing from a homegrown activity to a worldwide cultural phenomenon. More than 250 rare boards show the timeline of skate history; and photographs by C.R. Stecyk, Glen E. Friedman and Wynn Miller (among others) document the movement and its personalities. The California Heritage Museum is located in the vortex at Main Street and Ocean Park Blvd. Skateboard: Evolution of a California Culture will focus on the various regions of California that were the epicenters of skate design, production and culture: San Francisco/Santa Cruz, Santa Barbara, Malibu/Santa Monica/Venice, Huntington Beach/Orange County, and Oceanside/San Diego. Each has taken at least one turn in the spotlight over the last fifty years and the exhibit will provide an in-depth look at the birth and development of skate in California. California Heritage Museum is located at 2612 Main Street, Santa Monica, CA. http://web.mac.com/calmuseum/iWeb/Site/Home.html

CHERIE CURRIE’S NEON ANGEL: A Memoir of a Runaway. When Cherie Currie, the lead singer of 1970s teenage girl group The Runaways, sat down to write her personal memoir, she never imagined the book would be made into a highly anticipated movie, starring some of Hollywood’s hottest actors. Cherie Currie is the original lead singer of 70s teenage, all-girl rock band The Runaways. At the tender age of 15, she joined the group, a talented group of girls who could play rock like no other female group before them. The girls, Currie with Joan Jett, and Lita Ford on guitar and Sandy West on drums, arrived on the Los Angeles music scene in 1975, belting out provocative teen rebellion songs such as Cherry Bomb. As Cherie chronicles the bands rise from LA clubs to selling out their first US tour, she also weaves in a portrait of an amazing time in punk rock. The Runaways headlined shows with opening acts such as the Ramones, Van Halen, Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, Cheap Trick, and Blondie. They played at CBGBs, and got into the London punk scene and hung out with The Sex Pistols. With the help of multi-platinum hit songwriter and producer Kenny Laguna, Currie was able to have her book made into the feature film, The Runaways starring Dakota Fanning (War of the Worlds, New Moon, The Secret Lives of Bees) as Currie, and Kristen Stewart (Twilight, New Moon, Into The Wild, Panic Room) playing Joan Jett. The Runaways also stars Oscar nominee Michael Shannon (Revolutionary Road) as manager Kim Fowley, and Oscar winner Tatum O’Neal as Cheries mother. Visit: www.CherieCurrie.com and www.TheRunaways.com

AMERICAN INDIAN SKATEBOARDING EXHIBITION - An exhibition celebrating the vibrancy, creativity and history of American Indian skateboarding culture is on view at the Smithsonians National Museum of the American Indian in New York, the George Gustav Heye Center. Ramp It Up: Skateboard Culture in Native America includes 20 skatedecks, rare images, video of Native skaters and skate decks from Native companies and contemporary artists. The exhibition will close June 27, 2010. One of the most popular sports on Indian reservations, skateboarding has inspired American Indian and Native Hawaiian communities to host skateboard competitions and build skate parks to encourage their youth. Native entrepreneurs own skateboard companies and sponsor community-based skate teams. Native artists and filmmakers, inspired by their skating experiences, credit the sport with teaching them a successful work ethic. Highlights include a never-before-seen 1969 image taken by skateboarding icon, Craig R. Stecyk III, of a skatedeck depicting traditional Native imagery and 1973 home-movie footage of Zephyr surf team members Ricky and Jimmy Tavarez (Gabrielino-Tongva). The exhibition features the work of visual artists Bunky Echo-Hawk (Yakama/Pawnee), Joe Yazzie (Navajo), Traci Rabbit (Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma) and Dustinn Craig (White Mountain Apache/Navajo) and highlights young Native skaters such as 20-year-old Bryant Chapo (Navajo) and 10-year-old Augustin and 7-year-old Armondo Lerma (Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians). The exhibition originally appeared at the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C. from June 12-Sept. 13, 2009. The Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian in New York, the George Gustav Heye Center is located at One Bowling Green in New York City, across from Battery Park. BILLABONG: Limited Edition Green Day Mass Hysteria Boardshorts – Billabong and Green Day have been working on a Design Coop which will release the new special limited edition, Green Day Mass Hysteria boardshort for 2010. A gray and black color palette of bold plaid with Green Days?signature logo overlaid fit the image of the band perfectly, tying the rock n roll attitude championed by Green Day and the loose functional fashion of the surf culture. And although the promotion of the Green Day boardshort was relatively low key, it will find its way into the store windows of key shops in places like Times Square and Main Street Huntington Beach. Signed to multi-year contracts, a total of twenty-four of the world’s biggest skateboarding stars will compete in Street League exclusively. The Street League pros will be battling it out for more than $1,000,000 in prize money on a 3-stop arena tour this summer. The skaters will be competing at each event for the largest prize pool in skateboarding history.

SUICIDAL TENDENCIES NEWS - The First Ever SUICIDAL TENDENCIES DVD – Since their beginnings in Venice, CA in the early 80s, SUICIDAL TENDENCIES have led the charge in the skate punk/thrash metal movement, consequently influencing an entire generation of bands along the way. Fontana Distribution is proud to announce Live At The Olympic Auditorium, SUICIDAL TENDENCIES first ever DVD release! The DVD will street January 26, 2010 via the bands own imprint, Suicidal Records. The approximately 80-minute DVD features 16 tracks including ST classics Institutionalized, War Inside My Head, and Possessed To Skate and captures SUICIDAL in their most natural environment: Onstage, uncensored and ready to tear you to shreds. Elaborated ST founding vocalist Mike Muir, The band started getting emails from some crazy guy that always said, ‘I know you’ll probably think I’m crazy, but I’m not. I’m wanna book ST for a show and I got this idea…’. Well, one by one we shot down the ‘unique’ ideas until one time he emailed and said the Olympic Auditorium was being bought by a Korean Church. Shouldn’t it be sent off with a special last gig? The band agreed and then the work began. The promoter — Evel Dick Donato who went on to win Big Brother — tells a bit about the show, making of etc. on the intro. Lots of drama, none more than the day before the show when I woke up and couldn’t walk. But the show must go on and the back surgery would have to wait till afterwards. SUICIDAL recorded live at the Olympic Auditorium in front of 4,000 Cycos…but now you can enjoy it in the safety of your living room. http://www.suicidaltendencies.com

With the help of multi-platinum hit songwriter and producer Kenny Laguna, Currie was able to have her book made into the feature film, The Runaways –starring Dakota Fanning (War of the Worlds, New Moon, The Secret Lives of Bees) as Currie, and Kristen Stewart (Twilight, New Moon, Into The Wild, Panic Room) playing Joan Jett. The Runaways also stars Oscar nominee Michael Shannon (Revolutionary Road) as manager Kim Fowley, and Oscar winner Tatum O’Neal as Cheries mother. Visit: www.CherieCurrie.com and www.TheRunaways.com

WORLD SURFING RESERVES MOVEMENT – Nine-time World Surfing Champion Kelly Slater joined National Surfing Reserves founder Brad Farmer to announce his endorsement for the World Surfing Reserves program, and that 2010 will be the year of global surf spot enshrinements. In announcing this historic year for surf-spot preservation, Slater stated, “This is a pretty exciting thing for me to be a part of and support. It’s almost mind-numbing that [WSR] hasn’t happened yet, especially in Hawaii, the birthplace of surfing.” World Surfing Reserves seeks to identify and enshrine the most important and cherished surf areas around the world, in partnership with local surf communities. World Surfing Reserve (WSR) sites are nominated and selected based on four major criteria: quality and consistency of waves, importance to surf culture and history, environmental characteristics, and community support. Several surf areas in Australia, California, and Hawaii have been proposed for enshrinement as initial WSRs. These were selected from over 125 iconic beaches nominated from 34 countries. The nominations include sites like North Narrabeen and Manly Beach in Australia, Malibu and Santa Cruz in California, and Waikiki and Oahu’s North Shore in Hawaii, in addition to many others around the world. Beyond its cultural and aesthetic significance, each WSR is a meeting of land and sea selected for the unique and salutary nature of its waves and natural setting. The dedication of each WSR seeks the protection of this coastal zone of waves and habitat from wanton destruction and exploitation – through no other mechanism but the positive force of appreciation and valuation. Farmer and Slater also announced the launch of a new NSR website http://www.surfingreserves.org, which offers access to this exciting new vision of respect and valuation to beach-lovers all over the world. JUICE MAGAZINE NEWS – MARCH 2010

BOB BINIAK R.I.P. - Original Z-Boy, Bob “The Bullet” Biniak, suffered a cardiac arrest on Sunday and passed away on February 25, 2010 at 12:51 EST. Biniak charged at everything he did in life, from bombing down hills at 63mph to scaling full pipes in the desert to attacking Dog Bowl pool coping with a passion. Faster than a speeding bullet, Biniak pushed the boundaries of what was possible early on in the formative years of skateboarding. As one of the most competitive skaters of the early ’70s, Biniak left you with no choice but to bring your best to every session. His energy and enthusiasm impacted people all over the world, and he provoked the fun in every moment. For those who had the privilege to share in his company, you will remember how quick he was with a joke and how he kept you smiling even afer he left the room. His legacy in this world survives through his wife, Charlene, and daughter, Brie. He’ll be much missed by many. Rest in Peace, Biniak. A Bob Biniak Family Memorial is set for Saturday March 27, 2010 at the Venice Skatepark at 6:30pm. Share your art, written words and favorite Bobby B. stories with the community. There will be a Paddle Out in Biniak’s honor on Sunday March 28, 2010 at 9am at the Venice Breakwater in Venice, CA. SKATEBOARD: EVOLUTION OF A CALIFORNIA CULTURE – Exhibit runs through May 30, 2010. Curated by museum staff curator Michael Trotter and a committee including skateboard historian Dale Smith, 1960’S world champion Cris Dawson, Zephyr founders Skip Engblom and Jeff Ho as well as legendary Z-Boys Tony Alva, Stacy Peralta and Nathan Pratt, the exhibition traces the evolution of boards from pre-1950 to the present, showcasing the riders, designers, artists, and manufacturers that created the California phenomenon known as the skateboard. From the first planks of wood with metal roller skate wheels nailed to the bottom, through the era of clay to modern polyurethane and kicktails, the boards and riders scaled greater heights of daring and style and took “sidewalk surfing” from a homegrown activity to a worldwide cultural phenomenon. More than 250 rare boards show the timeline of skate history; and photographs by C.R. Stecyk, Glen E. Friedman and Wynn Miller (among others) document the movement and its personalities. The California Heritage Museum is located in the vortex at Main Street and Ocean Park Blvd.   “Skateboard: Evolution of a California Culture” will focus on the various regions of California that were the epicenters of skate design, production and culture: San Francisco/Santa Cruz, Santa Barbara, Malibu/Santa Monica/Venice, Huntington Beach/Orange County, and Oceanside/San Diego.

SUICIDAL TENDENCIES NEWS - The First Ever SUICIDAL TENDENCIES DVD To Be Released This January – Since their beginnings in Venice, CA in the early ‘80s, SUICIDAL TENDENCIES have led the charge in the skate punk/thrash metal movement, consequently influencing an entire generation of bands along the way. Fontana Distribution is proud to announce Live At The Olympic Auditorium, SUICIDAL TENDENCIES’ first ever DVD release! The DVD will street January 26, 2010 via the band’s own imprint, Suicidal Records. The approximately 80-minute DVD features 16 tracks including ST classics “Institutionalized,” “War Inside My Head,” and “Possessed To Skate” and captures SUICIDAL in their most natural environment: Onstage, uncensored and ready to tear you to shreds. Elaborated ST founding vocalist Mike Muir: “The band started getting emails from some crazy guy that always said, ‘I know you’ll probably think I’m crazy, but I’m not. SUICIDAL recorded live at the Olympic Auditorium in front of 4,000 Cycos…but now you can enjoy it in the safety of your living room.” http://www.suicidaltendencies.com

The inevitable sex and drugs came along with along with the rock and roll lifestyle, and Ozzy soon fell into an epic relationship with booze and chemicals. The stories of Ozzy’s days on the road are now those of legend—biting the head off of a live bat, the tragic plane crash that took the life of his best friend and writing partner—but few know about the real heartbreak he suffered during those days of hard living. The girls, Currie with Joan Jett, and Lita Ford on guitar and Sandy West on drums, arrived on the Los Angeles music scene in 1975, belting out provocative teen rebellion songs such as “Cherry Bomb.” As Cherie chronicles the band’s rise from LA clubs to selling out their first US tour, she also weaves in a portrait of an amazing time in punk rock. The Runaways headlined shows with opening acts such as the Ramones, Van Halen, Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, Cheap Trick, and Blondie. They played at CBGBs, and got into the London punk scene and hung out with The Sex Pistols. The Runaways also stars Oscar nominee Michael Shannon (Revolutionary Road) as manager Kim Fowley, and Oscar winner Tatum O’Neal as Cherie’s mother. The Runaways movie hits theaters nationwide March 19, 2010. FLOGGING MOLLY SET TO RELEASE ‘LIVE AT THE GREEK THEATRE’ 90 MIN CONCERT DVD AND DOUBLE CD IN STORES MARCH 2, 2010 - “Good evening Los Angeles, we’re Flogging Molly and this is what we do.” Those were the first words from singer Dave King on the evening of September 12, 2009, when Flogging Molly took the stage at the legendary Greek Theatre in Los Angeles, CA. For a man who twelve years prior was playing at the helm of what was arguably a local bar band, headlining the Greek Theatre was surely a crowning achievement for him and his six compatriots. Born at an Irish pub called Molly Malone’s on Hollywood’s Fairfax Blvd, Flogging Molly rose from relative obscurity through years of hard work and relentless touring, blending traditional Irish folk instrumentation with heartfelt punk rock. Never lacking for confidence and swagger, the band respectfully declined to accept an award from the LA Weekly in 1998 for ‘best bar band’, as they had much bigger dreams and aspirations than that title conveyed. Remarkably enough, only weeks before the Greek Theatre show, Flogging Molly was awarded an official Gold record plaque from the RIAA for their 2002 release, Drunken Lullabies. 500,000 units sold in this day and age is no small feat for any act, and once again it is a testament to the band’s foresight and evidence of the impact of their music on the throngs of fans that they play in front of each year. www.sideonedummy.com

AMERICAN INDIAN SKATEBOARDING EXHIBITION - Now Open in New York – An exhibition celebrating the vibrancy, creativity and history of American Indian skateboarding culture is on view at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian in New York, the George Gustav Heye Center.  “Ramp It Up: Skateboard Culture in Native America” includes 20 skatedecks, rare images, video of Native skaters and skate decks from Native companies and contemporary artists. 13, 2009. SURF NEWS

WAVERIDERS - You don’t have to be Irish to surf there…but a little crazy might help. Winner of Best Documentary at the 2009 Surfer Poll Awards, WAVERIDERS tells the little known story of surfing’s legendary Irish roots and its surprising connection to today’s worldwide surf phenomenon. The story unfolds through the inspirational history of Irish/Hawaiian legendary waterman, George Freeth, who inspired the sport’s rebirth among Hawaiian kings in the early twentieth century and is credited as the “Father of Modern Surfing”. This ocean‐adventure pays tribute to Freeth’s forgotten legacy; as the world’s first lifeguard and a skillful surfer, he crossed oceans to share what would become a contagious fervor for the sport. With its distinguished cast of world‐renowned surfers, WAVERIDERS journeys from Hawaii to California and back to Ireland’s shores following Freeth’s wave of influence. Renowned British and Irish surfers link up with world champion Kelly Slater, soul surfer Kevin Naughton, and the celebrated Malloy brothers to ride some of the most exciting surf ever seen on Ireland’s shores, along with internationally recognized surfers like Richie Fitzgerald, Gabe Davies, Craig Peterson, and Rabbit Kikai. Waveriders’ exploration reaches a spectacular climax when the surfers conquer the biggest swell ever ridden in Ireland, as they ride monster waves reaching heights of over fifty feet. Looking at surfing through an international lens, WAVERIDERS illuminates a heartfelt and adventurous story that unifies generations of surfers who share a competitive spirit and a common passion for a good swell. Revolver Entertainment is proud to present WAVERIDERS to DVD March 16, 2010. DVD Extras: Interviews, Deleted Scenes, Exclusive Wipeouts. Release Date: 03.16.10 www.waveridersfilm.com
