Proceeds From Charity Golf Event and Surf Contest to Benefit The Rob Machado Foundation (RMF) and Cardiff SEA

San Clemente, Calif. (March 2, 2011) — SURFER is pleased to announce that the Rob Machado Seaside Pro Junior presented by Reef and Hurley is now the only ASP Pro Junior 4-star competition in San Diego. The event, which will commence at Seaside Reef on April 22-23, 2011, will also include a Super Hero’s themed charity golf tournament at The Crossing at Carlsbad on Monday, April 18, 2011.

“The Rob Machado Seaside Pro Junior presented by Hurley and Reef is the only Pro Junior event in San Diego and represents the third of eight events on the men’s ASP North America Pro Junior Series,” said ASP Regional Media Officer, Bobby Shadley. “The surfers competing on the regional series are looking to finish within the top four on the ASP North America Pro Junior Series ratings in order to earn a berth on to the ASP World Junior Tour for 2011.”

This event will also serve as the first of three stops on the Women’s ASP North America Pro Junior Series, where the overall North American winner qualifies for the ASP Women’s World Junior Tour.

“The first pro contest I ever surfed in was at Seaside and I thought it would be good for the kids to bring one back. Seaside is a great break to showcase the talent that will be surfing in the event,” said Rob Machado.  The two-day contest will include a 72-competitor Junior Men’s division and 24-competitor Junior Women’s division, as well as a grom expression session. A $20,000 prize purse is up for grabs in the men’s field and $10,000 in the women’s field. Machado has brought in his family of sponsors—Hurley, Reef, Dragon, Nixon, DaKine, Channel Islands, Futures, and Sambazon—in addition to GoPro, and Surfline, to make this event an exciting new stop on the Pro Junior Series.

Pat O’Connell, long-time friend and VP Sports Marketing at Hurley said, “Rob and I got to talking one day and we realized that there was a huge opportunity to mix it up with the Hansen/Machado Classic, which ran for 10 years, and create an event that not only supported his local community but the next generation of pros.”

Proceeds from both the golf tournament and surf contest will go toward the Rob Machado Foundation (RMF) and it’s benefactor Cardiff SEA, a volunteer, non-profit organization representing parents, staff, and community members concerned with improving the education of children within the school district. For Machado, the golf tournament and surf contest are just one of the many ways he’s able to give back to his community. The RMF was founded in 2004 and has shifted its primary focus in the last few years to educating elementary school students on helping the environment. The Foundation puts a major emphasis on greening the two benefitting schools in his district in addition to teaching general eco-friendly practices such as organic gardening, composting, and ways to keep plastic out of our oceans.

“The golf event is a fun way for me to raise funding for Cardiff SEA.  The organization has been a great collaborator and always puts the funds we raise to good use,” said Machado.  “The goal in the end is to be able to help children understand their contribution towards a healthy Earth while showing surrounding communities and schools what’s possible through curriculum and programs that inspire our youth.”

LOS ANGELES, CA – July 22, 2010 – Easily one of the all-time great surf films, the “lost classic” Pacific Vibrations, has been digitally re-mastered in high definition (HD) and is coming to television for a whole new generation of surfers, beach bums and environmentalists alike to discover and enjoy. To celebrate, MGM HD and the U.S. Open of Surfing are proud to present the World HD Premiere of the 1970 film on August 1st as the official evening kick-off event for the 2010 U.S. Open of Surfing.

Often referred to as Woodstock on a wave, Pacific Vibrations is a colorful documentary by John Severson, Hall-of-Fame Surfer, filmmaker, artist and founder of Surfer Magazine.  From California to Hawaii, surfing legends Severson, Bill Hamilton and Corky Carroll continue their endless search for the perfect wave. The surfers reveal their motivation and obsession with the sport to soundtrack of pure rock legends including Cream, Crosby, Stills and Nash, Steve Miller and more (Rated G).

The World HD Premiere screening will take place at the Huntington Beach Pier located at 315 Pacific Coast Highway. Leading off the evening will be a special Q&A on the making of the film with Pacific Vibrations star and legendary surfer Bill Hamilton [editor’s note: see full bio below]. SURF REPORT : JULY 19, 2010

In sports history there have been few publications that have been able to not only propel themselves to elevations of success but also sustain their position on top of the market.  Surfer is one of those magazines.  Congratulations on influencing the persons, technology and culture of surfing for the last 50 years.   To commemorate this publication landmark Surfer has put together a book that is loaded with some of the heaviest athletes and personalities in the sport.  Edited by former Surfer editor Sam George, the chronicle of the magazine and its  ever present relativity to surfing will engage readers in the following:
