On October 3, 2009, a new chapter of Dogtown Chronicles began with the grand opening of the Venice Beach Skate Plaza in Venice, CA. A legendary array of skateboarding icons, sk8superstars, celebrities and rippers-on-the-rise made for a day that will go down in skateboarding history. Jesse Martinez, Christian Hosoi, Eric “Tuma” Britton, Aaron “Fingers” Murray, Cooksie, Scott Oster, Tim Jackson, Kelly Jackson, Ray Flores, Steve Olson, Alex Olson, Mark Jones, Brian Patch, Eddie Reategui, Dave Duncan, Darrell Delgado, Bennett Harada, as well as members of the Zephyr team: Bob “The Bullet” Biniak, Paul Constantineau, Allen Sarlo, Nathan Pratt, Cris Dawson and its creators: Jeff Ho, Craig Stecyk and Skip Engblom, were among the sk8/surf VIPs in attendance. Los Angeles’ Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and Councilman Bill Rosendahl were on hand for the ribbon cutting ceremony. With blistering skateboarding being thrown down in the bowl, snake run and street course, the neighborhood christened the new 16,000 square foot world class skatepark and “took the power back”. Respect the tradition.

SKATEBOARD: EVOLUTION OF A CALIFORNIA CULTURE – Exhibit runs from November 14, 2009 – May 30, 2009. Curated by museum staff curator Michael Trotter and a committee including skateboard historian Dale Smith, 1960’S world champion Cris Dawson, Zephyr founders Skip Engblom and Jeff Ho as well as legendary Z-Boys Tony Alva, Stacy Peralta and Nathan Pratt, the exhibition traces the evolution of boards from pre-1950 to the present, showcasing the riders, designers, artists, and manufacturers that created the California phenomenon known as the skateboard. From the first planks of wood with metal roller skate wheels nailed to the bottom, through the era of clay to modern polyurethane and kicktails, the boards and riders scaled greater heights of daring and style and took “sidewalk surfing” from a homegrown activity to a worldwide cultural phenomenon. More than 250 rare boards show the timeline of skate history; and photographs by C.R. Stecyk, Glen E. Friedman and Wynn Miller (among others) document the movement and its personalities. The California Heritage Museum is located in the vortex at Main Street and Ocean Park Blvd. “Skateboard: Evolution of a California Culture” will focus on the various regions of California that were the epicenters of skate design, production and culture: San Francisco/Santa Cruz, Santa Barbara, Malibu/Santa Monica/Venice, Huntington Beach/Orange County, and Oceanside/San Diego. Each has taken at least one turn in the spotlight over the last fifty years and the exhibit will provide an in-depth look at the birth and development of skate in California. California Heritage Museum is located at 2612 Main Street, Santa Monica, CA. http://web.mac.com/calmuseum/iWeb/Site/Home.html

2010 WORLD JUNIOR SURFING CHAMPIONSHIP will be held in New Zealand, one of the World’s most unique surfing destinations. The Junior Champs will be held at Piha Beach, a beautiful black sand beach famous for its large waves, just 45 minutes drive from downtown Auckland. The event will begin on January 20, 2010, at the peak of the Kiwi summer. New Zealand is one of the world’s most rewarding surfing spots with quality waves, plenty of choice and relatively few surfers. The main source of swell for both the North and South Islands is from the low pressure systems of the roaring forties, but New Zealand is fortunate to pick up swell from just about anywhere. For those used to fighting for a beach park and some room in the line up, surfing in New Zealand offers a very different experience. Parking is mostly free and being a country of only 4 million people there is plenty of room to catch the perfect wave. For those looking for an adventure, the best surf spots can be found off the beaten track.
