SKATEBOARD: EVOLUTION OF A CALIFORNIA CULTURE – Exhibit runs from November 14, 2009 – May 30, 2010. Curated by museum staff curator Michael Trotter and a committee including skateboard historian Dale Smith, 1960’S world champion Cris Dawson, Zephyr founders Skip Engblom and Jeff Ho as well as legendary Z-Boys Tony Alva, Stacy Peralta and Nathan Pratt, the exhibition traces the evolution of boards from pre-1950 to the present, showcasing the riders, designers, artists, and manufacturers that created the California phenomenon known as the skateboard. From the first planks of wood with metal roller skate wheels nailed to the bottom, through the era of clay to modern polyurethane and kicktails, the boards and riders scaled greater heights of daring and style and took “sidewalk surfing” from a homegrown activity to a worldwide cultural phenomenon. More than 250 rare boards show the timeline of skate history; and photographs by C.R. Stecyk, Glen E. Friedman and Wynn Miller (among others) document the movement and its personalities. The California Heritage Museum is located in the vortex at Main Street and Ocean Park Blvd.   “Skateboard: Evolution of a California Culture” will focus on the various regions of California that were the epicenters of skate design, production and culture: San Francisco/Santa Cruz, Santa Barbara, Malibu/Santa Monica/Venice, Huntington Beach/Orange County, and Oceanside/San Diego. Each has taken at least one turn in the spotlight over the last fifty years and the exhibit will provide an in-depth look at the birth and development of skate in California. California Heritage Museum is located at 2612 Main Street, Santa Monica, CA. http://web.mac.com/calmuseum/iWeb/Site/Home.html

X PARK CONTEST – “Our local park has been shut down for over a year due to terrible management  and a total disconnect from the skateboarding community. I couldn’t take it anymore and quit my job at Ford. I contacted the management and covinced them to let me rebuild and fix the park to operating order and to let me manage it. The locals have come out in droves to help. We’ve set over 21000 screws, patched, and painted and fixed the place up pretty well.I’ve been skating for over 25 years and haven’t seen anything like this. I’m so stoked to be a part of this. We’re throwing a contest to raise money for surface and lights. So far Ford is sending out a Roush Mustang for display and Harley is sending some bikes. A gaming bus is coming in and there’s going to be a gaming contest as well. We’re expecting over 500 people to show up and 100 to compete. We need your support for prizes and banners to cover the park with you logo and website. We know nothing comes for free in this world so on our end we’ll put your logo on future flyers, emails to our data base concernign future events and keep your banners up. This is a total DIY grassroots hostile coporate takeover. We have zero budget today but the way these kids have fought for this park we’ll be much better off in the future and would love for you to take part in that success. If you’re at all interested please contact Rick Morgan by email at initskater@yahoo.com or at home late night 251 987 1787 or at the park 850 434 6441 or call Melissa Morgan at 850 698 1848. The address is 1447 West Fairway Dr. Gulf Shores Alabama 36542. Thank you in advance for your support.”

SUICIDAL TENDENCIES NEWS – The First Ever SUICIDAL TENDENCIES DVD To Be Released This January – Since their beginnings in Venice, CA in the early ‘80s, SUICIDAL TENDENCIES have led the charge in the skate punk/thrash metal movement, consequently influencing an entire generation of bands along the way. Fontana Distribution is proud to announce Live At The Olympic Auditorium, SUICIDAL TENDENCIES’ first ever DVD release! The DVD will street January 26, 2010 via the band’s own imprint, Suicidal Records. The approximately 80-minute DVD features 16 tracks including ST classics “Institutionalized,” “War Inside My Head,” and “Possessed To Skate” and captures SUICIDAL in their most natural environment: Onstage, uncensored and ready to tear you to shreds. Elaborated ST founding vocalist Mike Muir: “The band started getting emails from some crazy guy that always said, ‘I know you’ll probably think I’m crazy, but I’m not. I’m wanna book ST for a show and I got this idea…’. Well, one by one we shot down the ‘unique’ ideas until one time he emailed and said the Olympic Auditorium was being bought by a Korean Church. Shouldn’t it be sent off with a special last gig? The band agreed and then the work began. The promoter — Evel Dick Donato who went on to win Big Brother — tells a bit about the show, making of etc. on the intro. Lots of drama, none more than the day before the show when I woke up and couldn’t walk. But the show must go on and the back surgery would have to wait till afterwards. SUICIDAL recorded live at the Olympic Auditorium in front of 4,000 Cycos…but now you can enjoy it in the safety of your living room.” http://www.suicidaltendencies.com

AMERICAN INDIAN SKATEBOARDING EXHIBITION – Now Open in New York – An exhibition celebrating the vibrancy, creativity and history of American Indian skateboarding culture is on view at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian in New York, the George Gustav Heye Center.  “Ramp It Up: Skateboard Culture in Native America” includes 20 skatedecks, rare images, video of Native skaters and skate decks from Native companies and contemporary artists. The exhibition will close June 27, 2010. One of the most popular sports on Indian reservations, skateboarding has inspired American Indian and Native Hawaiian communities to host skateboard competitions and build skate parks to encourage their youth. Native entrepreneurs own skateboard companies and sponsor community-based skate teams. Native artists and filmmakers, inspired by their skating experiences, credit the sport with teaching them a successful work ethic. Highlights include a never-before-seen 1969 image taken by skateboarding icon, Craig R. Stecyk III, of a skatedeck depicting traditional Native imagery and 1973 home-movie footage of Zephyr surf team members Ricky and Jimmy Tavarez (Gabrielino-Tongva).  The exhibition features the work of visual artists Bunky Echo-Hawk (Yakama/Pawnee), Joe Yazzie (Navajo), Traci Rabbit (Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma) and Dustinn Craig (White Mountain Apache/Navajo) and highlights young Native skaters such as 20-year-old Bryant Chapo (Navajo) and 10-year-old Augustin and 7-year-old Armondo Lerma (Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians). The exhibition originally appeared at the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C. from June 12-Sept. 13, 2009. The Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian in New York, the George Gustav Heye Center is located at One Bowling Green in New York City, across from Battery Park. The museum is free and open every day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Thursdays until 8 p.m.  By subway, the museum may be reached by the 1 to South Ferry, the 4 or 5 to Bowling Green or the R or W to Whitehall Street. BEAUTIFUL LOSERS ON DVD – Oscilloscope Laboratories is proud to announce the December 8, 2009 DVD release of Beautiful Losers, Aaron Rose’s celebration of one of the most influential cultural movements of a generation. Featuring Shepard Fairey (Obey founder and creator of the Barack Obama “Hope” poster), award-winning pro skater Ed Templeton, Harmony Korine (writer of the cult favorite Kids and director of Gummo and Mister Lonely), and Mike Mills (director of Thumbsucker and designer of album covers for Beck, Beastie Boys, Sonic Youth and more). The film also stars Barry McGee, Chris Johanson, Geoff McFetridge, Jo Jackson, Margaret Kilgallen, Stephen Posers, and Thomas Campbell. Based on the acclaimed art book “Beautiful Losers” by writer/director Aaron Rose, the film bowed theatrically on August 8, 2008 via Arthouse Films. In the early 1990s a loose-knit group of like-minded outsiders found common ground at a little NYC storefront gallery. Rooted in the do-it-yourself subcultures of skateboarding, surf, punk, hip-hop, and graffiti, they made art that reflected the lifestyles they led. Developing their craft with almost no influence from the “establishment” art world, this group, and the subcultures from which they have sprung, created a movement that is transforming pop culture. Graffiti Beach Pop-up stores are temporary stores (2 to 3 days) that set up in a vacant space or art gallery and sell product directly to consumers at wholesale prices. This recession proof retail concept offers a solution to art gallery owners and landlords that are searching for additional ways to bring in revenue, consumers that are looking for unique merchandise at a great price, and emerging designers and other artists that need an outlet to sell and market their product. 2010 WORLD JUNIOR SURFING CHAMPIONSHIP will be held in New Zealand, one of the World’s most unique surfing destinations. The Junior Champs will be held at Piha Beach, a beautiful black sand beach famous for its large waves, just 45 minutes drive from downtown Auckland. The event will begin on January 20, 2010, at the peak of the Kiwi summer. New Zealand is one of the world’s most rewarding surfing spots with quality waves, plenty of choice and relatively few surfers. The main source of swell for both the North and South Islands is from the low pressure systems of the roaring forties, but New Zealand is fortunate to pick up swell from just about anywhere. For those used to fighting for a beach park and some room in the line up, surfing in New Zealand offers a very different experience. Parking is mostly free and being a country of only 4 million people there is plenty of room to catch the perfect wave. For those looking for an adventure, the best surf spots can be found off the beaten track.
