Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 21 October, 2010 : – – School of Visual Arts (SVA) presents a lecture by Art Brewer, one of the leading surf photographers and innovators in the industry for the past 30 years. Brewer will speak about his his body of work documenting surf culture around the globe and his decades of experience as “the court painter” for the world’s surfing elite.

Brewer is known for both his mastery of the numerous technical and physical challenges involved in surf photography and the expressive quality of his images, which some have described as “portals to a vastly improved universe.” The event will be held on Thursday, November 4, 6 – 8pm, at the SVA Theatre, located at 333 West 23 Street, New York City. The lecture is presented by the Arts Abroad Program at SVA in conjunction with a new course Art Brewer is teaching on Action Surf Photography in Rincon, Puerto Rico.

A largely self-taught photographer who once studied with Ansel Adams, California native Art Brewer began his photo career as a teen shooting local Laguna Beach surfers and freelancing for Surfer magazine. He subsequently served as staff photographer, darkroom artist and photo editor for the magazine until the mid-80s. Since then Brewer has been traveling around the world in search of waves and the surfers that chase them. His portfolio spans photojournalism, portraiture and fine art photography in addition to commercial location work.

Brewer’s photographs have been exhibited worldwide, including at the Earl McGrath Gallery in New York, the Laguna Art Museum in California, and the São Paulo Mostra Internacional de Arte e Cultura Surf in Brazil. His images have appeared in hundreds of magazines including Rolling Stone, Sports Illustrated, Esquire and Playboy.

His books include Masters of Surf Photography: Art Brewer (The Surfers Journal, 2002) and Bunker Spreckels: Surfing’s Divine Prince of Decadence (1949-1977) (Taschen Books, 2007). Brewer is currently working on a documentary film on the life of Bunker Spreckels, slated to have its premier later in 2010.

Brewer’s corporate clients include: Pepsi; Nike; Volkswagen; Kodak; Quicksilver; Dasanti; Yamaha; Propel; Suzuki; Sony/Columbia-Tristar; Continental Airlines; Gatorade; Casio; Mattel Toys and SeaDoo Personal Watercraft.
