THE OTHER VENICE FILM FESTIVAL
PHOTOS BY: DAN LEVY
at Beyond Baroque Foundation, Venice, CA
October, 13-16, 2011
Featured films included the Allen Sarlo documentary Work to Surf and the Dogtown farce film, Day at the Pool.
Allen Sarlo, aka “The Wave Killer”, aka “The King of Mailbu”. Allen was surfing by age 6, at 14 he was surfing the infamous “Cove” at the POP pier. The film, “Dogtown, Z Boys” documented his adolescence and captured a celluloid preview of his athletically intense surfing style. In 1974, at 16 Allen took first place at the prestigious Malibu 4-A contest, to the chagrin of the older surfers. He tells his adventure as a surfer and the many contests he wins. The surf life style film “Work to Surf” is Allen’s latest adventure, it’s a bio documentary with a ‘feel good’ message. Allen is an active member of Surfrider Foundation, rallying over the years for cleaner water at Malibu’s “Surfrider Beach”.
A Day at the Pool is a documentary-style film that attempts to uncover the true origins of modern skateboarding. Interviews with Tony Alva, Stacy Peralta, Jay Adams and the rest of the Dogtown Crew reveal that an anonymous local kid may have been largely responsible for the skateboarding revolution that lead to their success in the late 70s.

PANHANDLE SLIM “L.A. FOLK” ART SHOW COVERAGE
OCTOBER. 15, 2011
PHOTOS BY DAN LEVY
Libby Knudson, artist and sole proprietor, of what has become one of the coolest galleries in Los Angeles, the Ranch-N-Roll, played host to yet another epic art expose’ on October 15, 2011. This evening featured the colorful and impacting works of deep South folk artist Panhandle Slim. Some in the skateboarding world might know him as Scott Stanton, one of the infamous Zorlac team warrior rippers. Others may know him through his unique Southern folk music with a twist. In whatever capacity you know of Panhandle Slim, his artistic talent is as unprecedented as his unassuming demeanor and relentless passion for creating his art in all forms.
This show highlighted a vibrant body of work encapsulating a diverse array of prolific musicians, skateboarders, poets, politicians, writers and other persons of merit. All of the paintings included quotes from the highlighted individual along with a caricature style portrait. It was overwhelmingly pleasant as you moved through the space and took in the power of the pieces coupled by the humor and sarcasm behind all the icons portrayed.
The opposing walls and displays were decorated with original works by Libby Knudson embellishing her custom country flair and unique eye for functional impacting display. The wooden cases were filled with authentic Western apparel and perfectly worn in cowboy boots giving you the sense of being in an old Western thoroughfare within shouting distance of a saloon.
The back patio served as a speak easy for the evening with an intimate setting where the small elite crowd was fortunate to experience a one of a kind performance by Rain Phoenix. This duo performed a rendition of “California Uber Alles” by the Dead Kennedies with a hauntingly prolific energy that left the entire audience in awe. The spirits were flowing as the barkeeper worked frivolously to appease the temporary saloon serving with a smile and sarcastic wit.
Panhandle Slim took a small detour from selling his art to sing a country song with Rain Phoenix bringing some Southern gut to the City of Angels. Exene Cervenka of legendary punk band X was in attendance along with art collectors and other Los Angeles elite.
The show was a complete success as Ranch-N-Roll continues to play host to some of the best modern-day artists in the world. Stay tuned for more to come from Panhandle Slim at http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=814093496.
Make sure to check out Ranch and Roll when you are in the Los Angeles area and pick up one of Libby’s custom-made Guadalupe chairs while you’re there. http://www.facebook.com/pages/Ranch-n-Roll/125615207451186
C.R. STECYK III ROGUE PRINTSHOP AND INSTALLATION
PHOTOS BY DAN LEVY
On the rare occasion, you may get a chance to meet your idols and have a conversation that will stay in your permanent story telling roster for life. It is even more out of the ordinary to actually be able to take part in the creative process with those you hold in high acclaim. The students of the California State University at Northridge, along with a lucky few, were able to do just that. The one and only C.R. Stecyk III led an interactive rogue printshop for aspiring art students of the university utilizing the techniques of silk screening and artistic lithography. Stecyk along with the students produced a body of work based around the concept of rogue signage, and the art was then hung up around the campus for all to see. The workshop went for three days and ended with a question and answer session with Craig, following a rare video installation . It was truly a one of a kind experience and the students were able to get a glimpse into what it really takes to be a professional artist.
The CSUN West Gallery, Art and Design Center, is in Room 201, 18111 Nordhoff St. Northridge, CA. Gallery Hours: Mon-Sat. 12-4pm. Thurs 12-8pm. Installation dates. Oct. 7-8 and Oct 10, 2011
SONIC GENERATIONS OF SKATE CONTEST
VENICE BEACH, CA
PHOTOS BY DAN LEVY
OCTOBER 22, 2011
For the 20 year anniversary of Sonic the Hedgehog game from Sega, ASA entertainment teamed up with the makers of Sonic and Sega to put on a vert contest in Venice Beach, CA. The concept was to bring together skateboarders from three different age ranges to compete in Sonic Generations of Skate.
First Place: Tony Hawk (first generation), Andy Macdonald (second generation), Mitchie Brusco (third generation)
Second Place: Kevin Staab (first generation), Sandro Dias (second generation), Paul-Luc Ronchetti (third generation)
Third Place: Steve Caballero (first generation), Pierre Luc Gagnon (second generation), Elliot Sloan (third generation)
Fourth Place: Sergie Ventura (first generation), Lincoln Ueda (second generation), Adam Taylor (third generation)
The disciplines by which the teams would be judged included High Air, Best Trick, Individual, and Doubles. The doubles ended up turning into triples a few times and it was epic.
There were a ton of highlights throughout the day including Sandro Dias landing the first 900 in Venice Beach History. It was a bit surreal to see this level of skateboarding just paces away from where skateboarding cut its teeth on the unforgiving proving grounds of the now defunct concrete stage known simply as The Pit.
Speaking only in terms of skateboarding, the historical merit was undeniable, and as far as disciplines go this group of skaters are the top elite of modern-day vert skating. While the vert session was going off, the session in the pool at the Venice Skatepark adjacent was heated as well.
This was not a contest with a huge prize purse, yet it didn’t stop the skaters from pushing their own limits. Mitchie Brusco landed his first ever kickflip varial 540 during the best trick contest and everyone went nuts. Elliot Sloan added to the madness with a 720 tailgrab. Sergie Ventura threw up a 50/50 body varial to switch 50/50 to fakie. Tony Hawk pleased the crowd with his signature ollie 540 and a kickflip McTwist. During the doubles/triples section Mitchie, Tony and Andy went for synchronized 720’s and almost pulled it.
It was another great day in Venice Beach skateboarding history. It’s kind of crazy to think that Sonic the Hedgehog by Sega is 20 years old and is still as exciting to kids today as it was for us kids 20 years ago. Props to ASA and Sega for throwing a great event. For more information on Sonic Generations of Skate visit www.sega.com/sonicskate.
