Quiksilver Waterman Collection presents the 6th Hawaiian Islands Vintage Surf Auction

Fifty years worth of connections and an unbridled passion for all things surf have made Randy Rarick’s Hawaiian Islands Vintage Surf Auction an international success story. The auction returns this year with just four months to hammer time: July 22 & 23, at the Blaisdell Center.

What began 10 years ago, running every other year, has become the most highly anticipated auction in the surfing world. The first five auctions saw more than $2.6million worth of privately owned pieces go under the hammer and Rarick is quietly confident that the 6th will be his best yet.

“This auction attracts a serious gathering of international surf collectors who know their stuff and share my deep passion for surfing history and the unique items this auction offers,” said Rarick. “I travel the world on a mission to discover quality, historic pieces and to ultimately make the connection between seller and buyer. It’s a win-win all around.”

Over the years the auction has included everything from the personal surfboards, surfwear and trophies of famous surfers, to original artwork, magazines, posters, decals and other artifacts of the surfing culture.

This year, 65 percent of the pieces offered will be antique surfboards from the turn of the century through to the mid-1980s. To legitimately be ‘vintage’, an item must be at least 25 years old. The next requirement is a good story and recorded history to go with it. And it doesn’t stop there; Rarick’s credo is that every board on offer is “good enough to hang or take out and ride”.

“My ultimate warehouse find came just in time for this year’s auction,” said Rarick. “From the Santa Paula, California airport hanger of movie actor Steve McQueen. It’s a pristine 1963 ‘speed’ board shaped by Pat Curren that was in the hanger alongside McQueen’s motorcycles, race cars and movie props. Talk about going back in time!”
