TONY HAWK FOUNDATION NEWS – Help Build A Skatepark In Watts – Tony Hawk Foundation announces latest skatepark Grant Awards. The Tony Hawk Foundation Board of Directors has announced the recipients of its Fall 2009 Skatepark Grant Awards, as well as a special allocation to match, dollar-for-dollar, donations to the Watts Skatepark project in Los Angeles. From the 52 applications submitted for this season’s Grant Review Session, the Board of Directors selected fourteen from low-income communities across the U.S., and collectively awarded $130,000 to help build free, quality skateparks that will serve at-risk youth. The Tony Hawk Foundation Board also allocated $10,000 in matching funds for the Watts Skatepark project in Los Angeles. Through January 15, 2010 all donations made via skatewatts.org will be MATCHED by the Tony Hawk Foundation*. Having helped launch it in October, the Tony Hawk Foundation is also featuring the Watts Skatepark project during the Athletes For Hope Who Gives? Racing For A Cause challenge, a widely publicized fundraising event hosted by globalgiving.org/athletes-for-hope/. With few alternatives to crime, gangs, and drugs, youth in the Watts community struggle daily to find healthy pastimes that can keep them engaged and active. Through this effort to build a free-quality public skatepark in Watts, the Tony Hawk Foundation is helping local youth realize their dream of a world-class skatepark. Make a contribution during this limited campaign, and the impact of your donation will be DOUBLED. Visit skatewatts.org and support the youth of Watts today. (*All donations made during the Who Gives? Racing For A Cause challenge—December 15, 2009 through January 15, 2010—will be matched by the Tony Hawk Foundation, up to $10,000.). A charitable, non-profit organization, the Tony Hawk Foundation was established in 2002 by its namesake, professional skateboarder Tony Hawk, to promote and provide funds for high-quality public skateparks in low-income areas throughout the United States—with an emphasis on the word “quality.” Since then, the Foundation has awarded $3,111,000 to 444 communities. The Foundation focuses on working with local officials and grassroots, community-based organizations that plan to hire designers and contractors with strong experience designing and building skateparks. http://tonyhawkfoundation.org/

SKATEBOARD: EVOLUTION OF A CALIFORNIA CULTURE – Exhibit runs through May 30, 2010. Curated by museum staff curator Michael Trotter and a committee including skateboard historian Dale Smith, 1960’S world champion Cris Dawson, Zephyr founders Skip Engblom and Jeff Ho as well as legendary Z-Boys Tony Alva, Stacy Peralta and Nathan Pratt, the exhibition traces the evolution of boards from pre-1950 to the present, showcasing the riders, designers, artists, and manufacturers that created the California phenomenon known as the skateboard. From the first planks of wood with metal roller skate wheels nailed to the bottom, through the era of clay to modern polyurethane and kicktails, the boards and riders scaled greater heights of daring and style and took “sidewalk surfing” from a homegrown activity to a worldwide cultural phenomenon. More than 250 rare boards show the timeline of skate history; and photographs by C.R. Stecyk, Glen E. Friedman and Wynn Miller (among others) document the movement and its personalities. The California Heritage Museum is located in the vortex at Main Street and Ocean Park Blvd.   “Skateboard: Evolution of a California Culture” will focus on the various regions of California that were the epicenters of skate design, production and culture: San Francisco/Santa Cruz, Santa Barbara, Malibu/Santa Monica/Venice, Huntington Beach/Orange County, and Oceanside/San Diego. Each has taken at least one turn in the spotlight over the last fifty years and the exhibit will provide an in-depth look at the birth and development of skate in California. California Heritage Museum is located at 2612 Main Street, Santa Monica, CA. http://web.mac.com/calmuseum/iWeb/Site/Home.html

MUSIC NEWS

SUICIDAL TENDENCIES NEWS – The First Ever SUICIDAL TENDENCIES DVD To Be Released This January – Since their beginnings in Venice, CA in the early ‘80s, SUICIDAL TENDENCIES have led the charge in the skate punk/thrash metal movement, consequently influencing an entire generation of bands along the way. Fontana Distribution is proud to announce Live At The Olympic Auditorium, SUICIDAL TENDENCIES’ first ever DVD release! The DVD will street January 26, 2010 via the band’s own imprint, Suicidal Records. The approximately 80-minute DVD features 16 tracks including ST classics “Institutionalized,” “War Inside My Head,” and “Possessed To Skate” and captures SUICIDAL in their most natural environment: Onstage, uncensored and ready to tear you to shreds. Elaborated ST founding vocalist Mike Muir: “The band started getting emails from some crazy guy that always said, ‘I know you’ll probably think I’m crazy, but I’m not. I’m wanna book ST for a show and I got this idea…’. Well, one by one we shot down the ‘unique’ ideas until one time he emailed and said the Olympic Auditorium was being bought by a Korean Church. Shouldn’t it be sent off with a special last gig? The band agreed and then the work began. The promoter — Evel Dick Donato who went on to win Big Brother — tells a bit about the show, making of etc. on the intro. Lots of drama, none more than the day before the show when I woke up and couldn’t walk. But the show must go on and the back surgery would have to wait till afterwards. SUICIDAL recorded live at the Olympic Auditorium in front of 4,000 Cycos…but now you can enjoy it in the safety of your living room.” http://www.suicidaltendencies.com

FLOGGING MOLLY SET TO RELEASE ‘LIVE AT THE GREEK THEATRE’ 90 MIN CONCERT DVD AND DOUBLE CD IN STORES MARCH 2, 2010 – “Good evening Los Angeles, we’re Flogging Molly and this is what we do.” Those were the first words from singer Dave King on the evening of September 12, 2009, when Flogging Molly took the stage at the legendary Greek Theatre in Los Angeles, CA. For a man who twelve years prior was playing at the helm of what was arguably a local bar band, headlining the Greek Theatre was surely a crowning achievement for him and his six compatriots. Born at an Irish pub called Molly Malone’s on Hollywood’s Fairfax Blvd, Flogging Molly rose from relative obscurity through years of hard work and relentless touring, blending traditional Irish folk instrumentation with heartfelt punk rock. Never lacking for confidence and swagger, the band respectfully declined to accept an award from the LA Weekly in 1998 for ‘best bar band’, as they had much bigger dreams and aspirations than that title conveyed. Remarkably enough, only weeks before the Greek Theatre show, Flogging Molly was awarded an official Gold record plaque from the RIAA for their 2002 release, Drunken Lullabies. 500,000 units sold in this day and age is no small feat for any act, and once again it is a testament to the band’s foresight and evidence of the impact of their music on the throngs of fans that they play in front of each year. www.sideonedummy.com

BEBE BUELL NEWS – Singer Bebe Buell will headline live at Hiro Ballroom in Manhattan on Wednesday, January 13th 2010, to launch her new full-length CD Sugar. Buell will perform every song on the new disc and will also be debuting her brand new Bebe Buell – Oscar Wilde rock-n-roll couture T-shirt, as part of the immensely popular Worn Free vintage rock t-shirt line. Buell released her hugely successful latest single Air Kisses, from the new CD, this past summer and will now premiere the Air Kisses for the Masses anime video, produced/created by The Nerdy Duo, at the Hiro Ballroom event. Sugar marks the charismatic Bebe Buell’s first new record in ten years, being a deeply autobiographical, cinematic rock ‘n roll affair…wide in scope and very emotional. The new disc offers an amazing range of original material including Black Angel, a beautifully heartbreaking tribute to her late friend, Joey Ramone, along with a smoldering rendition of Johnny Thunders’ Untouchable(a song he always wanted Bebe to cover). Says The Aquarian Weekly in their recent review of Sugar…….” This CD is the real deal by a genuine prodigy of punk rock pioneers. Sugar takes chances and stands out bold in an industry that sorely needs to return to the rock and roll direction that I’ve heard here today. In a word: Classic !” The new shirts will hit stores in April 2010 but will be available exclusively at Bebe Buell’s Hiro Ballroom show on Wednesday, January 13th and at www.wornfree.com after that event. AMERICAN INDIAN SKATEBOARDING EXHIBITION – Now Open in New York – An exhibition celebrating the vibrancy, creativity and history of American Indian skateboarding culture is on view at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian in New York, the George Gustav Heye Center.  “Ramp It Up: Skateboard Culture in Native America” includes 20 skatedecks, rare images, video of Native skaters and skate decks from Native companies and contemporary artists. The exhibition will close June 27, 2010. One of the most popular sports on Indian reservations, skateboarding has inspired American Indian and Native Hawaiian communities to host skateboard competitions and build skate parks to encourage their youth. Native entrepreneurs own skateboard companies and sponsor community-based skate teams. Native artists and filmmakers, inspired by their skating experiences, credit the sport with teaching them a successful work ethic. Highlights include a never-before-seen 1969 image taken by skateboarding icon, Craig R. Stecyk III, of a skatedeck depicting traditional Native imagery and 1973 home-movie footage of Zephyr surf team members Ricky and Jimmy Tavarez (Gabrielino-Tongva).  The exhibition features the work of visual artists Bunky Echo-Hawk (Yakama/Pawnee), Joe Yazzie (Navajo), Traci Rabbit (Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma) and Dustinn Craig (White Mountain Apache/Navajo) and highlights young Native skaters such as 20-year-old Bryant Chapo (Navajo) and 10-year-old Augustin and 7-year-old Armondo Lerma (Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians). The exhibition originally appeared at the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C. from June 12-Sept. 13, 2009. The Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian in New York, the George Gustav Heye Center is located at One Bowling Green in New York City, across from Battery Park. The museum is free and open every day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Thursdays until 8 p.m.  By subway, the museum may be reached by the 1 to South Ferry, the 4 or 5 to Bowling Green or the R or W to Whitehall Street. For information, call (212) 514-3700 or visit the museum’s Web site at www.americanindian.si.edu

2010 WORLD JUNIOR SURFING CHAMPIONSHIP will be held in New Zealand, one of the World’s most unique surfing destinations. The Junior Champs will be held at Piha Beach, a beautiful black sand beach famous for its large waves, just 45 minutes drive from downtown Auckland. The event will begin on January 20, 2010, at the peak of the Kiwi summer. New Zealand is one of the world’s most rewarding surfing spots with quality waves, plenty of choice and relatively few surfers. The main source of swell for both the North and South Islands is from the low pressure systems of the roaring forties, but New Zealand is fortunate to pick up swell from just about anywhere. For those used to fighting for a beach park and some room in the line up, surfing in New Zealand offers a very different experience. Parking is mostly free and being a country of only 4 million people there is plenty of room to catch the perfect wave. For those looking for an adventure, the best surf spots can be found off the beaten track.

BIG WAVE NEWS – Mavericks pioneer and big wave surf legend Jeff Clark filed a lawsuit today against Mavericks Surf Ventures Inc. (MSV), the company he co-founded to run the Mavericks Surf Contest, and its current directors. The lawsuit cites breach of contract, breach of fiduciary duty and fraud. The lawsuit comes one week after an already re-scheduled mediation was canceled by MSV attorney Paul Marotta and CEO Keir Beidling, claiming the Mavericks Surf Contest would be held that week. It was not. “I’ve waited patiently and remained quiet in an effort to settle our issues in private, without casting a shadow over the contest that I founded. But it’s obvious MSV has no intention of working this out. They have forced me to file suit in order to move on with my life,” Clark said. “When I signed on to partner with Keir and Evolve Sports, I trusted them to do the right thing, to honor my spirit and passion for surfing,” Clark said. “I made a mistake and I trusted the wrong people. They have refused to honor the contracts they created and have turned the contest into a corporate circus.” The complaint, filed with the Superior Court of San Francisco County, states that MSV breached its contracts with Clark, withheld payments on those contracts, and breached its fiduciary duties to shareholders by the Board’s self-dealing, squandering of corporate assets and failure to disclose even basic financial and other corporate information. The suit claims that, in breaching their fiduciary duties, MSV and its current directors acted with oppression, fraud and malice. GOD WENT SURFING WITH THE DEVIL – Since the year 2000, over 4,300 Palestinian and 1,000 Israeli lives have been claimed by the escalating conflict in the region. The situation grew markedly worse in 2006, when Israel responded to the election of Hamas by sealing off the borders, ending the free-flow of people and goods. Palestinian militants reacted to the siege by targeting Israel’s civilian population with deadly rocket strikes; the Israeli Army countered with air strikes, targeting militants but often claiming the lives of innocent residents. In 2007 it emerged that a small group of young men were surfing in Gaza, sharing battered surfboards they had attained prior to the siege. Word traveled north to Israel, and that same year, a mixed group of Israelis and Americans delivered a dozen boards to their Palestinian counterparts. In the spring of 2008, they would attempt to deliver another 23 surfboards into Gaza. By this time the situation in Gaza had deteriorated further, the border still sealed, with military activity a near daily occurrence. “God Went Surfing With the Devil” charts the difficulties and dangers encountered by surfers in the region, while charting their daily struggle to supersede the conflict through the joys of surfing. http://www.godwentsurfing.com
