at Beyond Baroque Foundation, Venice, CA
October, 13-16, 2011

Featured films included the Allen Sarlo documentary Work to Surf and the Dogtown farce film, Day at the Pool.

Allen Sarlo, aka “The Wave Killer”, aka “The King of Mailbu”. Allen was surfing by age 6, at 14 he was surfing the infamous “Cove” at the POP pier. The film, “Dogtown, Z Boys” documented his adolescence and captured a celluloid preview of his athletically intense surfing style. In 1974, at 16 Allen took first place at the prestigious Malibu 4-A contest, to the chagrin of the older surfers. He tells his adventure as a surfer and the many contests he wins. The surf life style film “Work to Surf” is Allen’s latest adventure, it’s a bio documentary with a ‘feel good’ message. Allen is an active member of Surfrider Foundation, rallying over the years for cleaner water at Malibu’s “Surfrider Beach”.

A Day at the Pool is a documentary-style film that attempts to uncover the true origins of modern skateboarding. Interviews with Tony Alva, Stacy Peralta, Jay Adams and the rest of the Dogtown Crew reveal that an anonymous local kid may have been largely responsible for the skateboarding revolution that lead to their success in the late 70s.

JUICE TV – MALIBU SOUTH SWELL SESSION – SEPT 3-4, 2011

Labor Day weekend typically marks the last days of summer and an end to the chaos of crowded beaches, parking lots and line ups. This year, beginning early Friday morning, radio stations put out a warning for tourists to stay out of the water, and local surf shops began to refuse rentals to anyone who wasn’t a local. Surfers up and down the coast gathered together and waited for the first south swell of the 2011 fall season. As the sun was setting on Friday night and the tide went out, Malibu lit up.  Over the next day and a half, surfing’s legends paddled out into what some compared to a Hawaiian session, as broken boards littered the shoreline and locals roared from the beach as their hometown heroes shot the pier once again in celebration of summer’s end.

www.usopenofsurfing.com

Huntington Beach, CA – The 2011 Nike US Open of Surfing has a soundtrack and it will play live on the beach before tens of thousands of fans. The event, owned and produced by IMG, the global leader in sports and entertainment, is taking a cue from its action sports roots, and set to deliver the largest free concert series of the summer.

“It’s fun bringing some of the best musicians in the world to the US Open of Surfing,” says Hurley’s Director of Music and Entertainment Marketing Greg Teal. “It doesn’t get much better than hearing your favorite band perform live on the beach.”

This year’s musical line-up is a representation of today’s youth culture featuring headlining sets by psych-pop rockers MGMT, platinum-selling rockers Jimmy Eat World and Swedish electro/rock sensations The Sounds. The series will also include sets by the most buzzed about names emerging on the music scene this year: Surfer Blood and Dead Country. “We’re pretty excited to come to Huntington Beach for the US Open of Surfing.  Our advice to everyone:  Drop out with MGMT, drop by for MGMT, but just don’t drop in on MGMT,” said MGMT’s Andrew VanWyngarden.

Known as the world’s largest youth culture and action sports festival, the Nike US Open of Surfing will feature daily concerts Thursday through Saturday,
August 4-6, at the conclusion of the surfing competition.  All concerts are free and open to the public.

With more than 500,000 people in attendance along a 14-acre stretch of sand on the south side of Huntington Beach Pier, the Nike US Open of Surfing showcases the best in surf, skate, BMX, music, fashion and art. All events at the US Open of Surfing are FREE and OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. Live webcast of all the events can be viewed daily atwww.usopenofsurfing.com. Anchored by the world’s largest professional surfing competition, the $460,000 US Open is a pivotal point on the ASP World Tour for both the men and women. The men’s competition will feature a North America ASP Men’s Prime event with valuable points on the line right before the coveted ASP Top 34 rotation. For the women, the US Open of Surfing will host the final event of the 2011 ASP World Title Tour and will potentially crown a women’s world champion in Surf City this summer. In addition to the high-stakes mens and womens divisions, the US Open will feature an ASP Grade Four men’s and women’s Junior Pro as well as the Pacifico Nose Riding Invitational – always a crowd favorite.

The action doesn’t stop at the shoreline. On the beach, Converse Coastal Carnage will once again host the most talented and diverse crew of riders from across the globe as they skate in a state-of-the-art skate bowl. And, a stellar crew of BMX riders will push the realm of possibility at the Nike 6.0 HB BMX Pro. The runway will be busy on Thursday, August 4 as five of the nation’s top high schools will compete for $25,000 in the Hurley Walk the Walk National Championship – the ultimate youth fashion competition.
