JUICE MAGAZINE NEWS – FEBRUARY 2010

JUICE NEWS – FEBRUARY 2010

BOB BINIAK R.I.P. – Original Z-Boy, Bob “The Bullet” Biniak, suffered a cardiac arrest on Sunday and passed away on February 25, 2010 at 12:51 EST. Biniak charged at everything he did in life, from bombing down hills at 63mph to scaling full pipes in the desert to attacking Dog Bowl pool coping with a passion. Faster than a speeding bullet, Biniak pushed the boundaries of what was possible early on in the formative years of skateboarding. As one of the most competitive skaters of the early ’70s, Biniak left you with no choice but to bring your best to every session. His energy and enthusiasm impacted people all over the world, and he provoked the fun in every moment. For those who had the privilege to share in his company, you will remember how quick he was with a joke and how he kept you smiling even afer he left the room. His legacy in this world survives through his wife and daughter. He’ll be much missed by many. Rest in Peace, Biniak. There will be a sunset skate session in Biniak’s honor on Sunday, February 28, 2010 at the Venice Skatepark. Photo by Glen E. Friedman. http://idealistpropaganda.blogspot.com/2010/02/bob-bullet-biniak-original-z-boy-bad.html

HERE ARE A FEW OF OUR FAVORITE BINIAK QUOTES… R.I.P. BINIAK…

“Nobody could ride the radical terrain in those days like we did.” – BOB BINIAK – Issue 53 – Juice Magazine

“We used to terrorize Hollywood. I was wearing leather pants and I had dyed the roots of my block hair black with white tips. I was going to 999 and bouncing people around and getting in fights. It was crazy. There was the change of skateboarding and the innovation of the technology that took it to another level, and then there was the music that went along with that. We were into Nugent and Hendrix, and then it was punk rock.” – BOB BINIAK – Issue 52 – Juice Magazine

“Not only did you have to skate, but you had to have the attitude, too.” – BOB BINIAK – Issue 52 – Juice Magazine

“One time we were skating O.J. Simpson’s pool, and we were looking in the window and saw those gold shoes. We almost broke the window and took them. We would looking everywhere for stuff to ride. I remember at the Keyhole, one time, we were filming for Hal Jepson for the Go For It surf film and we all got arrested. We were all sitting in the Beverly Hills Jail for skateboarding.” – BOB BINIAK – Issue 52 – Juice Magazine

“I love the limelight and I want to be in it, and skateboarding gave me that whole attitude. It was the best education of all time.” – BOB BINIAK – Issue 52 – Juice Magazine

“Beyond the Zephyr team, more talent came out of the Venice, Santa Monica, Malibu and Palisades are than anywhere in the world.” – BOB BINIAK – Issue 53 – Juice Magazine

“Candy-coating this story would only ruin it. To tell this story, you better tell it real, because it is what it is, and if you don’t tell it real, than it’s a joke.” – BOB BINIAK – Issue 53 – Juice Magazine

“In so many ways, I believe we brought an entirely new style of skateboarding to the world.” – BOB BINIAK – Issue 66 – Juice Magazine

“My hope is that the skatepark in Venice gives kids a great place to hone their skills, so that some of the next generations of great skaters will be coming out of the Dogtown/Venice area.” – BOB BINIAK – Issue 66 – Juice Magazine

“Living in Venice, for over 40 years, there are many favorite memories. I’d say skating with Cahill, Jay, Wentzle, Muir, Shogo, Valentine, Wes, and P.C. at a spot where three hills converged at the heart of Dogtown. On these hills, I earned the nickname “Bullet”.” – BOB BINIAK – Issue 66 – Juice Magazine

“Favorite skateboarders from the Venice/Dogtown area… There would only be one way to answer that question and that would be, all of the crew, all of the Z-Boys.” – BOB BINIAK – Issue 66 – Juice Magazine

TONY HAWK FOUNDATION NEWS – In a survey of law-enforcement officials from across the U.S., officers report that public skateparks have had a positive impact on youth in their communities, contributed to a reduction in skate-related trespassing, and facilitated more positive interaction between cops and kids. Conducted by the Tony Hawk Foundation in 2009, over 100 officers were interviewed from communities where the Foundation has contributed to establishing a free, public skatepark. Ninety percent responded favorably when asked if they considered their skatepark an important community asset. Most also reported that they’ve had no major incidents at their skateparks, and almost half credit the skatepark for reducing incidents of youth crime in their communities. Federally registered nonprofit organizations, municipalities, or public agencies may apply for grants from the Tony Hawk Foundation. The deadline to complete applications is March 1, 2010. http://tonyhawkfoundation.org/

The San Antonio local’s short film “New York State of Mind” was recently crowned the top audience-selected video submission in the short-form video contest sponsored by camera manufacturer, Nikon.  Drawing inspiration from one of his favorite travel destinations, New York City, Friedberg artfully captured the Festival’s theme of “A Day Through Your Lens.”  His video, one of more than 1,200 submissions, raced to the top of the audience-selected submissions and captured the $25,000 prize. As a former professional skateboarder, Friedberg rallied widespread support from the skateboarding community to earn a combination of the most views and highest average rating. He credits retweets of his Festival video via Twitter by media personalities Bam Margera (@BAM_MARGERA), Steve Berra (@steve_berra) and Tony Hawk (@tonyhawk) as a key to his win. Friedberg plans to utilize the $25K prize money to revitalize 411 Video Magazine, a publishing venture he began years ago.  His experience skateboarding and the first iteration of 411 Video Magazine led him to pursue filmmaking, recording several of his skateboarding comrades. JASON JESSEE x OBEY CLOTHING – Long time friend and man of iconic style, Jason Jessee invited us in to his realm to work together on a collection that we are proud to introduce for Spring 2010. The common thread that ties Jason and OBEY together is the underlying drive to do it yourself. Seeing Jason’s surroundings opened up an understanding of his ability to take everything from found objects to blank pieces of paper and somehow make them intriguing and unique. Jason pulls from a wealth of knowledge from times past where you hand made objects. Seeing hand tooled leather, metal sculptures and giant wood slabs sitting right along side skateboards, bikes and guns offers a look in to how Jason weaves the past and present together. The OBEY 4 Jason Jessee collection is a hand picked assortment based on some key pieces that have become synonymous with his style as well as an illustration by Shepard and some moments in time captured while visiting him in Watsonville. Jason Jessee prints will be available on 2/9/10 on OBEYCLOTHING.com. Edition of 200, Numbered and Signed by both Jessee and Shepard.

SKATEBOARD: EVOLUTION OF A CALIFORNIA CULTURE – Exhibit runs through May 30, 2010. Curated by museum staff curator Michael Trotter and a committee including skateboard historian Dale Smith, 1960’S world champion Cris Dawson, Zephyr founders Skip Engblom and Jeff Ho as well as legendary Z-Boys Tony Alva, Stacy Peralta and Nathan Pratt, the exhibition traces the evolution of boards from pre-1950 to the present, showcasing the riders, designers, artists, and manufacturers that created the California phenomenon known as the skateboard. From the first planks of wood with metal roller skate wheels nailed to the bottom, through the era of clay to modern polyurethane and kicktails, the boards and riders scaled greater heights of daring and style and took “sidewalk surfing” from a homegrown activity to a worldwide cultural phenomenon. More than 250 rare boards show the timeline of skate history; and photographs by C.R. Stecyk, Glen E. Friedman and Wynn Miller (among others) document the movement and its personalities. The California Heritage Museum is located in the vortex at Main Street and Ocean Park Blvd.   “Skateboard: Evolution of a California Culture” will focus on the various regions of California that were the epicenters of skate design, production and culture: San Francisco/Santa Cruz, Santa Barbara, Malibu/Santa Monica/Venice, Huntington Beach/Orange County, and Oceanside/San Diego. Each has taken at least one turn in the spotlight over the last fifty years and the exhibit will provide an in-depth look at the birth and development of skate in California. California Heritage Museum is located at 2612 Main Street, Santa Monica, CA. http://web.mac.com/calmuseum/iWeb/Site/Home.html

MUSIC NEWS

SUICIDAL TENDENCIES NEWS – The First Ever SUICIDAL TENDENCIES DVD To Be Released This January – Since their beginnings in Venice, CA in the early ‘80s, SUICIDAL TENDENCIES have led the charge in the skate punk/thrash metal movement, consequently influencing an entire generation of bands along the way. Fontana Distribution is proud to announce Live At The Olympic Auditorium, SUICIDAL TENDENCIES’ first ever DVD release! The DVD will street January 26, 2010 via the band’s own imprint, Suicidal Records. The approximately 80-minute DVD features 16 tracks including ST classics “Institutionalized,” “War Inside My Head,” and “Possessed To Skate” and captures SUICIDAL in their most natural environment: Onstage, uncensored and ready to tear you to shreds. Elaborated ST founding vocalist Mike Muir: “The band started getting emails from some crazy guy that always said, ‘I know you’ll probably think I’m crazy, but I’m not. I’m wanna book ST for a show and I got this idea…’. Well, one by one we shot down the ‘unique’ ideas until one time he emailed and said the Olympic Auditorium was being bought by a Korean Church. Shouldn’t it be sent off with a special last gig? The band agreed and then the work began. The promoter — Evel Dick Donato who went on to win Big Brother — tells a bit about the show, making of etc. on the intro. Lots of drama, none more than the day before the show when I woke up and couldn’t walk. But the show must go on and the back surgery would have to wait till afterwards. The inevitable sex and drugs came along with along with the rock and roll lifestyle, and Ozzy soon fell into an epic relationship with booze and chemicals. The stories of Ozzy’s days on the road are now those of legend—biting the head off of a live bat, the tragic plane crash that took the life of his best friend and writing partner—but few know about the real heartbreak he suffered during those days of hard living. I AM OZZY (Grand Central Publishing Hardcover; $26.99; January 25, 2010) is the heavy metal pioneer’s unbelievable story told, for the first time, in Ozzy’s hilarious, witty, and inimitable voice. www.ozzy.com. CHERIE CURRIE’S “NEON ANGEL: A Memoir of a Runaway” hits bookstores March 16, 2010. When Cherie Currie, the lead singer of 1970s teenage girl group The Runaways, sat down to write her personal memoir, she never imagined the book would be made into a highly anticipated movie, starring some of Hollywood’s hottest actors. Cherie Currie is the original lead singer of ‘70s teenage, all-girl rock band The Runaways. At the tender age of 15, she joined the group, a talented group of girls who could play rock like no other female group before them. The girls, Currie with Joan Jett, and Lita Ford on guitar and Sandy West on drums, arrived on the Los Angeles music scene in 1975, belting out provocative teen rebellion songs such as “Cherry Bomb.” As Cherie chronicles the band’s rise from LA clubs to selling out their first US tour, she also weaves in a portrait of an amazing time in punk rock. The Runaways headlined shows with opening acts such as the Ramones, Van Halen, Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, Cheap Trick, and Blondie. They played at CBGBs, and got into the London punk scene and hung out with The Sex Pistols. With the help of multi-platinum hit songwriter and producer Kenny Laguna, Currie was able to have her book made into the feature film,  The Runaways –starring Dakota Fanning (War of the Worlds, New Moon, The Secret Lives of Bees) as Currie, and Kristen Stewart (Twilight, New Moon, Into The Wild, Panic Room) playing Joan Jett.  The Runaways also stars Oscar nominee Michael Shannon (Revolutionary Road) as manager Kim Fowley, and Oscar winner Tatum O’Neal as Cherie’s mother. The Runaways movie hits theaters nationwide March 19, 2010. FLOGGING MOLLY SET TO RELEASE ‘LIVE AT THE GREEK THEATRE’ 90 MIN CONCERT DVD AND DOUBLE CD IN STORES MARCH 2, 2010 – “Good evening Los Angeles, we’re Flogging Molly and this is what we do.” Those were the first words from singer Dave King on the evening of September 12, 2009, when Flogging Molly took the stage at the legendary Greek Theatre in Los Angeles, CA. For a man who twelve years prior was playing at the helm of what was arguably a local bar band, headlining the Greek Theatre was surely a crowning achievement for him and his six compatriots. Born at an Irish pub called Molly Malone’s on Hollywood’s Fairfax Blvd, Flogging Molly rose from relative obscurity through years of hard work and relentless touring, blending traditional Irish folk instrumentation with heartfelt punk rock. Never lacking for confidence and swagger, the band respectfully declined to accept an award from the LA Weekly in 1998 for ‘best bar band’, as they had much bigger dreams and aspirations than that title conveyed. Remarkably enough, only weeks before the Greek Theatre show, Flogging Molly was awarded an official Gold record plaque from the RIAA for their 2002 release, Drunken Lullabies. 500,000 units sold in this day and age is no small feat for any act, and once again it is a testament to the band’s foresight and evidence of the impact of their music on the throngs of fans that they play in front of each year. www.sideonedummy.com

THE CASUALTIES DEBUT NEW NEW VIDEO ON MYSPACE – Los Angeles, CA – With seven albums under their collective belt and countless tours across the U.S., Europe, South America, Japan and Mexico it would seem hardcore punk stalwarts The Casualties have done it all. But one shouldn’t be so quick to assume anything with these guys who still have much more to bring to the punk-rock scene. To wit, their latest album, We Are All We Have, though full of their signature bracing, high-octane hardcore punk, also features a few surprises. http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoid=101053389

AMERICAN INDIAN SKATEBOARDING EXHIBITION – Now Open in New York – An exhibition celebrating the vibrancy, creativity and history of American Indian skateboarding culture is on view at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian in New York, the George Gustav Heye Center.  “Ramp It Up: Skateboard Culture in Native America” includes 20 skatedecks, rare images, video of Native skaters and skate decks from Native companies and contemporary artists. The exhibition will close June 27, 2010. Highlights include a never-before-seen 1969 image taken by skateboarding icon, Craig R. Stecyk III, of a skatedeck depicting traditional Native imagery and 1973 home-movie footage of Zephyr surf team members Ricky and Jimmy Tavarez (Gabrielino-Tongva).  The exhibition features the work of visual artists Bunky Echo-Hawk (Yakama/Pawnee), Joe Yazzie (Navajo), Traci Rabbit (Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma) and Dustinn Craig (White Mountain Apache/Navajo) and highlights young Native skaters such as 20-year-old Bryant Chapo (Navajo) and 10-year-old Augustin and 7-year-old Armondo Lerma (Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians). The exhibition originally appeared at the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C. from June 12-Sept. 13, 2009. WAVERIDERS – You don’t have to be Irish to surf there…but a little crazy might help. Winner of Best Documentary at the 2009 Surfer Poll Awards, WAVERIDERS tells the little known story of surfing’s legendary Irish roots and its surprising connection to today’s worldwide surf phenomenon. The story unfolds through the inspirational history of Irish/Hawaiian legendary waterman, George Freeth, who inspired the sport’s rebirth among Hawaiian kings in the early twentieth century and is credited as the “Father of Modern Surfing”. This ocean‐adventure pays tribute to Freeth’s forgotten legacy; as the world’s first lifeguard and a skillful surfer, he crossed oceans to share what would become a contagious fervor for the sport. With its distinguished cast of world‐renowned surfers, WAVERIDERS journeys from Hawaii to California and back to Ireland’s shores following Freeth’s wave of influence. Renowned British and Irish surfers link up with world champion Kelly Slater, soul surfer Kevin Naughton, and the celebrated Malloy brothers to ride some of the most exciting surf ever seen on Ireland’s shores, along with internationally recognized surfers like Richie Fitzgerald, Gabe Davies, Craig Peterson, and Rabbit Kikai. Waveriders’ exploration reaches a spectacular climax when the surfers conquer the biggest swell ever ridden in Ireland, as they ride monster waves reaching heights of over fifty feet. Looking at surfing through an international lens, WAVERIDERS illuminates a heartfelt and adventurous story that unifies generations of surfers who share a competitive spirit and a common passion for a good swell. MALIBU SURFING ASSOCIATION – MOVIE NIGHT on Saturday Feb. 6, 2010 at Duke’s in Malibu, CA. www.msasurfing.org

BIG WAVE NEWS – Mavericks pioneer and big wave surf legend Jeff Clark filed a lawsuit against Mavericks Surf Ventures Inc. (MSV), the company he co-founded to run the Mavericks Surf Contest, and its current directors. The lawsuit cites breach of contract, breach of fiduciary duty and fraud. The lawsuit comes one week after an already re-scheduled mediation was canceled by MSV attorney Paul Marotta and CEO Keir Beidling, claiming the Mavericks Surf Contest would be held that week. It was not. “I’ve waited patiently and remained quiet in an effort to settle our issues in private, without casting a shadow over the contest that I founded. But it’s obvious MSV has no intention of working this out. They have forced me to file suit in order to move on with my life,” Clark said. “When I signed on to partner with Keir and Evolve Sports, I trusted them to do the right thing, to honor my spirit and passion for surfing,” Clark said. “I made a mistake and I trusted the wrong people. They have refused to honor the contracts they created and have turned the contest into a corporate circus.” The complaint, filed with the Superior Court of San Francisco County, states that MSV breached its contracts with Clark, withheld payments on those contracts, and breached its fiduciary duties to shareholders by the Board’s self-dealing, squandering of corporate assets and failure to disclose even basic financial and other corporate information. The suit claims that, in breaching their fiduciary duties, MSV and its current directors acted with oppression, fraud and malice.
